House Passes President Trump’s First Rescissions Package

This week, the House passed H.R. 4, President Trump’s first package of spending cuts. The bill includes $9.4 billion in cuts, with $8.3 billion cut from the Department of State and USAID programs. This package codifies President Trump’s Executive Orders to defund NPR, PBS, and USAID. This strips funding from the Swamp’s radical pet programs including:

  • $1B in United Nations (UN) contributions
  • $135M in contributions to the World Health Organization (WHO)
  • $6M for supporting media and civic life in Palestine
  • $5.1M to strengthen “the resilience of lesbian, gay bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer global movements”
  • $2.1M for climate resilience in Southeast Asia, Latin America, and East Africa
  • $1M for voter ID in Haiti

The passage of H.R. 4 is a big win for American taxpayers, but it is only the start. Congress must codify more of President Trump and DOGE’s spending cuts to undo decades of Washington’s wasteful spending.

Leading the Effort to Protect American Jobs and Consumers

I led a letter to U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick urging his department to reverse its plan to terminate the Tomato Suspension Agreement (TSA) and instead pursue substantive negotiations that strengthen American businesses and protect American jobs through a bilateral arrangement.

Since its inception in 1996, the TSA has been renegotiated every five years, ensuring fair and enforceable trade deals that support American tomato growers and keep prices stable for consumers. According to economic analysis, terminating the agreement now risks up to 50,000 jobs in Arizona and Texas alone.

President Trump’s America First trade policies have delivered real results for American workers, and abandoning the TSA now would undermine those achievements.

The TSA has safeguarded tens of thousands of American jobs, stabilized markets, and strengthened our vital agriculture sector. Pulling the plug on the TSA would only hurt American families still struggling from the radical Biden-Harris regime’s inflationary policies.

This is an opportunity for President Trump to do what he does best: Make a deal that benefits American businesses, workers, and consumers. I will continue to defend our hardworking farmers and fight for fair trade agreements in Congress.

The letter may be read here.

Arizona Sun Times covered the letter here.

Clear Messaging, Closed Border: Op-Ed

Although the Trump Administration has many historic victories to be proud of, the crowning achievement is undoubtedly the securing of our southern border. Not only does this fulfill President Trump’s signature campaign promise, but it also reveals that the message of “law and order” is just as strong as enforcement of the law itself.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has been featured — and smeared for appearing in — several ad campaigns that have aired on television and social media across America and around the world, warning illegal aliens to self-deport now or risk permanent deportation.

When America speaks, the world indeed listens. Now, after four long and chaotic years, this country is once again speaking up for our sovereignty, our citizens, and our way of life.

The Blaze published my op-ed, and the full piece may be read here.

Visiting the White House for President Trump’s Congressional Picnic

Thank you to President Trump and the First Lady for hosting a wonderful Congressional Picnic.

It was a great night to celebrate America with one of my lovely daughters and granddaughter.

House Oversight Committee Hearings

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held a hearing titled “A Hearing with Sanctuary State Governors.” My colleagues and I publicly questioned and held to account Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and New York Governor Kathy Hochul for their sanctuary policies that endanger Americans by shielding criminal illegal aliens from federal immigration enforcement. During the hearing, the sanctuary governors refused to condemn their states’ reckless policies when confronted with the devastating costs for Americans.

President Donald Trump is delivering on his promises to the American people by taking bold action to secure the border, enforce the immigration laws of the United States, and remove dangerous criminal illegal aliens from our communities. I highlighted three specific pieces of text in the United States Code that the governors violate with their sanctuary policies:

  • 8 U.S.C. § 1324 - "Any person who, knowing that a person is an alien . . . knowing or in reckless disregard of the fact that an alien has come to, entered, or remains in the United States in violation of law, conceals, harbors, or shields from detection, or attempts to conceal, harbor, or shield from detection, such alien in any place . . . . shall, for each alien in respect to whom such a violation occurs . . . be fined . . . imprisoned not more than 10 years, or both."
  • 8 U.S.C. § 1324(b) - "In conducting investigations and hearings...immigration officers and administrative law judges shall have reasonable access to examine evidence of any person or entity being investigated..."
  • 8 U.S.C. § 1373(a) - "Notwithstanding any other provision of Federal, State, or local law, a Federal State, or local government entity or official may not prohibit, or in any way restrict any government entity or official from sending to, or receiving from, the Immigration and Naturalization Service information regarding the citizenship or immigration status, lawful or unlawful, of any individual."

Sanctuary state governors could not defend their reckless rhetoric and policies, which are putting American lives at risk, shielding dangerous criminal illegal aliens, and obstructing lawful federal immigration enforcement. Click the image below to watch part of my remarks from the hearing:

The Oversight Committee also held a hearing titled “Securing Americans’ Genetic Information: Privacy and National Security Concerns Surrounding 23andMe’s Bankruptcy Sale.” During the hearing, my colleagues and I highlighted serious national security and privacy concerns surrounding the potential future ownership and control of 23andMe, Inc.—a direct-to-consumer genetic testing company that recently filed for bankruptcy and holds a vast genetic database containing DNA information on 15 million customers. I discussed the ownership and licensure of genetic information when customers submit their DNA to 23andMe with the witnesses.

All companies, including 23andMe, must ensure foreign adversaries or hostile private entities cannot access, manipulate, or exploit Americans’ DNA. Congress must take appropriate actions to safeguard Americans’ genetic data and uphold their privacy. Click the image below to watch my questions:

The Oversight Subcommittee on Military and Foreign Affairs held a hearing titled “Clearing the Path: Reforming Procurement to Accelerate Defense Innovation.” My colleagues and I underscored how burdensome defense acquisition and procurement procedures in the Department of Defense (DOD) continuously stifle innovation in the American defense industry at the cost of U.S. national security and competitiveness on the world stage. We also discussed ways Congress can modernize government procurement and acquisition processes to foster innovation, strengthen national security, and restore government transparency to the American people.

Continuing Resolutions (CRs) create barriers for streamlining and modernizing the procurement process and are one of the biggest drivers of funding, budgeting, and fraud problems in the government. Congress’s habitual passage of short-term spending bills is a huge problem. Click the image below to watch my questions:

House Judiciary Committee Hearing

The House Judiciary Committee held a markup and passed two of my bills, H.R. 59 and H.R. 98 out of committee. H.R. 59, the Mens Rea Reform Act, establishes a default mental state of “knowingly” for federal criminal offenses that lack an explicit mental state standard—the prosecution must prove that the defendant knew their behavior would incur federal charges. H.R. 98, the End Endless Criminal Statutes Act, repeals ten federal provisions carrying unnecessary criminal penalties, like selling colored margarine in shapes other than triangles or discarding produce without sufficient cause.

  • H.R. 2159 - Count the Crimes to Cut Act;
  • H.R. 3492 - Protect Children’s Innocence Act.
