Dear Community Members,

As we prepare to welcome Shabbat, we stand in steadfast solidarity with the people of Israel.

Like you, we are closely following the situation in the region. While the news is quickly evolving, Israel is continuing to conduct precision strikes against the Iranian regime’s military and nuclear assets.

With the regime continuing to violate its international obligations and on the cusp of obtaining a nuclear weapon, it’s clear this was an existential danger to Israel—and to the international community—that could no longer be ignored.

In moments like these, it’s important for countries like Canada—that value democracy and reject terrorism—to affirm Israel’s right to defend its people and act decisively to end the threat of a nuclear-armed Iran once and for all.

Iran is one of the greatest threats to global peace and security. Among its many victims are 55 Canadians, killed when Iran shot down a Ukrainian civilian airliner in 2020. Most recently, Iranian agents targeted former Liberal Justice Minister Irwin Cotler in an assassination plot.

As the Prime Minister said in April, “We have to be clear-eyed of the fundamental risk of Iran and do everything with our international partners to check it.” At the G7 this Sunday, Canada has an opportunity to lead a united global response against the Iranian threat.

For Iran to continue on its current path means the oppression of Iranian citizens, the state-sponsorship of global terrorism, and a direct threat to the lives of millions of innocent people around the world—including here in Canada.

Join thousands of other Canadians in sending a message to the Prime Minister

I encourage you to light an extra Shabbat candle tonight in honour of our Israeli brothers and sisters at during this difficult time—first and foremost the hostages who remain chained in the tunnels of Gaza.

Shabbat shalom,

Noah Shack
Interim President, CIJA
