Washington, D.C. | www.mpac.org ([link removed]) | June 13, 2025 — The Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) affirms its unwavering solidarity with community members, faith leaders, and peaceful demonstrators across Los Angeles who are courageously exercising their First Amendment rights. We join in amplifying their call for dignity, fairness, and the preservation of democratic freedoms for all.
We are deeply disturbed by escalating reports of indiscriminate Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids—now extending beyond workplaces and stores to include schools and potentially health centers. These actions are contributing to a growing climate of fear and intimidation throughout our city.
This fear has been compounded by the recent and unprecedented deployment of the National Guard and U.S. Marines in response to overwhelmingly peaceful demonstrations. Such militarized interventions send a dangerous message: that public expression and civic engagement are threats rather than rights protected under the U.S. Constitution. Notably, the administration's decision to activate federal forces without the governor’s consent marks a departure from historical precedent not seen since the 1960s.
Across Los Angeles, thousands are making their voices heard—not with violence, but with clarity and conviction. Angelenos are demanding that the promises of democracy—dignity, transparency, and equal protection under the law—extend to all communities, regardless of race, immigration status, or faith.
The recent ICE operations have disproportionately harmed workers, laborers, and essential community members, separating families, disrupting schools, and forcing many into hiding. Families are missing milestones like graduation ceremonies out of fear. Migrant workers are being driven from fields into isolation. These tactics are not only inhumane—they are deeply destabilizing and unjust.
Federal institutions must not be misused to suppress dissent or fracture families. Their role must be to uphold justice, ensure safety, and protect the most vulnerable with compassion and accountability. Policies that encourage racial profiling, unlawful detention, or blanket surveillance only deepen mistrust and division.
We call upon all levels of government—city, state, and federal—to immediately:
* Cease the deployment of military forces against peaceful protesters;
* End indiscriminate ICE operations that terrorize communities;
* Uphold constitutional rights, including the freedom of speech, assembly, and due process;
* Promote policies that prioritize fairness, restraint, and the restoration of public trust.
This is a defining moment for our city and our nation. The response to peaceful calls for justice must not be fear, force, or silence—but protection, listening, and reform. We urge all community leaders and residents to stand united in defense of our shared values.
Let us rise to the moral test before us—together, with courage, compassion, and conviction.
Follow us.
