Opposing Assault of Senator Padilla During DHS Press Conference

This week’s abhorrent assault of Senator Padilla (D-CA) during a DHS press conference is another alarming sign that Donald Trump is taking this country towards authoritarianism. The administration is trying to stomp out anyone who disagrees with them, including public officials doing their jobs. I stood in solidarity with Senator Padilla and am demanding an investigation.
High School Mariachi Band State Champion
This week I had the pleasure of seeing the state champion mariachi band from McAllen High School perform in Washington. It’s always great to see young talent excelling in the arts. ¡Felicidades!
Meeting with Alzheimer’s Association
This week, I had the pleasure of meeting with the Alzheimer’s Association to discuss the importance of public health infrastructure to build strong, long-lasting communities. We also discussed the importance of continued investment in Alzheimer’s and dementia research. Thank you for sharing your stories with me!
Legislative Updates
Statement on Governor Abbott Sending National Guard to San Antonio
Earlier this week, Governor Abbott sent the National Guard to San Antonio ahead of this week’s demonstrations without alerting local law enforcement. Congressman Greg Casar (TX-35) and I released a joint statement on Governor Abbott needlessly deploying the National Guard and escalating tensions rather than promoting safety.

Amicus Brief Opposing Trump’s EO on Birthright Citizenship
There is overwhelming evidence that Trump’s Executive Order ending birthright citizenship is an illegal attack on our constitution. I am urging the Supreme Court to uphold the 14th amendment and protect our democratic principles. This week, I signed onto an amicus brief, a legal document directed towards the Supreme Court detailing why Trump is attempting to undermine our democratic principles.
The full amicus brief is available here.
Bipartisan Introduction of Legislation to Strengthen U.S.-ASEAN Relations
This week, I introduced the PARTNER with ASEAN Act 2025. This legislation is an important step between the close and strategic partnership of the United States and Southeast Asian Nations. For decades, ASEAN has contributed to the stability and prosperity of the Indo-Pacific and has increasingly grown in its geopolitical importance. This legislation promotes U.S. leadership in the region as well as mutually beneficial dialogue with surrounding countries and regions.
