[1]Mark Kelly for Senate

It takes a lot to shock me.

Yesterday was shocking. Senator Alex Padilla was shoved, pinned, and handcuffed by federal agents at a press conference held by Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem. It’s behavior I have never seen before.

Alex was trying to ask Secretary Noem a question, in his own state, to keep his constituents safe. It is his job, as a United States senator and a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, to provide oversight in situations like this. He’s a good man, a good senator, a good advocate for the people of his state — and he had every right to be there.

Still, he was violently forced to the ground and handcuffed.

While I am shocked, I am not surprised. This is part of a pattern of inflammatory behavior from Donald Trump’s White House, and it is leading our country down a dangerous path.

I’ll echo Senator Padilla now and say this: If that’s how they treat a United States senator, imagine how they’re treating everyday people, when the cameras aren’t rolling.

I assure you, I will continue taking action to hold this Administration accountable.

You have my word on that.

Thank you,

Mark
