An evil GENIUS

When you think of all of the world’s greatest inventions, you’re sure to think of things like the printing press, the vaccine, or the lightbulb… and of course, cryptocurrency. Because the world truly needed another way to scam your grandpa.

Despite all of us having this explained to us multiple times by the annoying guy at the bar who won’t leave us alone, it still doesn’t really make sense why cryptocurrency needs to exist. Except, of course, for the fact that it can make Trump and his friends extremely rich.

Republicans in Congress, with the help of some Democrats ([link removed]) , are currently pushing for a bill known as the GENIUS Act, which, according to ([link removed]) banking badass Senator Elizabeth Warren, would “create a superhighway for Donald Trump’s corruption.” I wonder if he’ll allow Teslas on this superhighway.

The bill would allow banks and private companies to issue “stablecoins” with limited regulation. While the bill prohibits members of Congress and senior administration officials from issuing crypto, it does not apply to POTUS… how convenient is that! It’s not like crypto has already increased the sitting president’s family’s net worth by $2.9 billion ([link removed]) .

New Data for Progress polling ([link removed]) finds a strong majority of voters (62%) want Congress to prevent Trump and his family from personally benefiting from crypto. It turns out, voters think the GENIUS Act should regulate the stablecoins of the “very stable genius” himself.

It’s like if Marie Antoinette said, “let them eat their crypto losses.” We don’t know about y’all, but this weekend is looking like a nice weekend for a No Kings rally!

Here are some other highlights from DFP this week:

When you've made Bush look like a climate champion...

There weren’t many good things happening in the George W. Bush administration in 2005, but the creation of the Loan Programs Office was one of them.

The program has provided funding for battery manufacturing, critical minerals, solar and battery storage, and nuclear power plants — all the ingredients you need for a clean energy future. Unfortunately, the words “clean energy” might as well be the industry-that-must-not-be-named for the Republican Party, which could rescind billions in LPO funds in their One Big Benefits Burglary.

A majority of voters (58%) agree ([link removed]) with a statement saying Congress should keep funding in place for DOE’s government-backed loans, including majorities of Democrats (75%) and Independents (59%).

[link removed]

At this point, we might need to start funding our clean energy projects with Afterpay. Too bad clean energy companies can’t simply get $1 million loans ([link removed]) from their dads!

A stimmy for Social Security

You can buy a lot with $2,500 — 166 tickets to Materialists, 31 copies of Mario Kart World, or about 5 hours at the hotel ([link removed].) from the White Lotus season 3. But you won’t be able to do any of that, because Trump’s tariffs are now projected ([link removed]) to cost each American household an average of $2,500 per year. Sorry!

To make matters worse for every American over 62, the Social Security cost-of-living adjustment doesn’t kick in until January 2026. That’s a lot of early bird specials between now and then.

Luckily, the Social Security Emergency Inflation Relief Act would provide ([link removed]) all beneficiaries with an emergency $200 per month benefit increase through the end of the year. Our new polling ([link removed]) finds that this proposal is overwhelmingly popular with voters across party lines, with support from 82% of Democrats, 81% of Independents, and 84% of Republicans.

[link removed]

Call it another stimulus check for Americans facing a cataclysmic disaster that’s upending the U.S. economy — and this time, we’re not talking about a global pandemic, just our president.
