Yesterday, officers violently slammed Senator Alex Padilla to the ground and handcuffed him because he asked a question during a public Department of Homeland Security press conference.

Let that sink in: A United States Senator was physically removed and silenced for asking about Trump’s brutal ICE crackdowns in his own state.

That’s not democracy. That’s authoritarianism. Plain and simple.

The use of force against him reeks of the oppression in the Soviet Union that led my family to come to this country with nothing but hope and $759 to our name.

And now, it’s happening here.

We will not bow to tyrants. I’ve stood up to Trump before. I blew the whistle when he tried to extort Ukraine. I’m standing up to him again now. But standing up comes at a cost, and Republicans are already coming after me for daring to tell the truth.
