Late night bombings in Tehran launched over nuclear deal

Late last night, Israel caught the world off guard by launching a major airstrike inside Iran. Fighter jets struck Tehran, hitting not just military sites but also apartment buildings and office complexes in civilian areas. Israel claims some highfalutin military commanders lived in those buildings, but the damage clearly targeted residential zones which is a sharp turn from previous strikes that focused exclusively on military targets. How the strikes unfolded
First wave: Explosions rocked Tehran's residential neighborhoods. Multiple residential apartment buildings - including some in areas known to house military officers - and offices were hit.
Second wave: Israel struck six military bases and key parts of Iran’s nuclear program - like the Natanz uranium enrichment site - in a massive blow to Iran’s defense infrastructure.
Why now?
This happened right before the sixth round of nuclear talks in Oman between Iran, the U.S., and other world powers - negotiations Israel has warned could undermine regional security. Israel’s leader, Prime Minister Netanyahu, said this attack (named Operation Rising Lion) will continue until “the threat” is removed.
What is the U.S. saying?
Marco Rubio, the U.S. Secretary of State, said the U.S. was not involved in the strikes. He warned Iran not to hit U.S. people or bases.
Buttttt reports confirm the U.S. knew in advance that Israel planned the strikes, even if they didn’t help execute them. So, that’s awkward.
What about Iran?
Iran’s leadership said they consider these strikes a declaration of war and promised a decisive response - which could include missiles, drones, or proxy operations. Already, Iran launched over 100 drones toward Israel but most have been intercepted.
The human toll
Tehran streets are scarred with ruptured buildings and injured civilians. Iranian state media and social platforms show images of firefighters at the wreckage of apartment complexes and residences. Casualties include both military personnel and general citizens, including children. Many Iranians are fleeing border towns like Tabriz but are limited in travel because most flights in the surrounding area have been cancelled. Israel has closed schools, cancelled public events (e.g. Tel Aviv Pride), and are sounding city-wide sirens, clearly bracing for retaliation.
Was this preventable?
1000%. The original Iran nuclear deal was designed to prevent this exact situation. Trump 1.0 killed it; a hard-fought, internationally backed agreement that successfully froze Iran’s nuclear weapons program and put it under strict monitoring. It was working. But Trump pulled out even though diplomats and even Israeli security officials warned that scrapping the deal would make the world less safe and almost definitely push the region toward war. Fast forward 8 years later, as world leaders scramble to rebuild what Trump broke, everyone’s worst fear has come true. So yes, not only was this preventable, it was already prevented, and Trump fucked it all up.
Why this matters
Civilian impact: Hitting civilian buildings - even if officials live there - marks a new level of escalation in Israeli military strategy.
Risk of broader war: Iran's vow to retaliate and the scale of these strikes raise real fears of a regional, if not global, conflict.
Diplomacy hanging by a thread: Bombing while nuclear talks are underway severely challenges any prospects for renewed agreements.
U.S.–Israel dynamic frayed: The U.S. distancing itself publicly, despite prior warning, suggests tension in its relationship - though support for Israel remains strong among many American lawmakers.

This multi-wave airstrike marks a turning point: Israel has moved from discreet military targets to civilian areas in Iran, killing both military and non-military individuals. Iran’s vow to strike back could trigger a broader war. And while the U.S. says it’s uninvolved, its awareness of the operation poses uncomfy questions about its true role.
