What happened yesterday should terrify every American who still believes in democracy and the rule of law.

Senator Alex Padilla, California’s first Latino senator and a longtime advocate for immigrant communities, was handcuffed and forcibly removed from a press conference for doing his job.

All he did was ask a question. FBI agents grabbed him and pinned him to the ground.

Padilla was demanding answers from Trump’s Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, about the extreme and unlawful immigration raids being carried out in communities across Los Angeles. Instead of getting a response, he was silenced, assaulted, and humiliated.

Make no mistake: this is what authoritarianism looks like.

Senator Padilla himself said it best: “If this is how DHS treats a U.S. Senator, imagine what they’re doing to farm workers, cooks, day laborers.”

We will not back down. Not while Trump deploys troops against protestors. Not while his administration locks up immigrants and punishes dissent. Not even while elected officials are physically attacked for asking questions.

Now is the time to stand up as a unified front. Will you split $5 between Senator Alex Padilla and Democratic Values to show that we will not be silenced?
