Nuclear-armed Israel has illegally attacked Iran overnight, bombing residential areas in the capital Tehran, killing senior Iranian government and military figures, as well as nuclear scientists. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has stated that the Natanz nuclear facility has been bombed and is said to be working with Iranian authorities to assess radiation levels at the site.
Iran has reportedly responded by sending 100 drones towards Israel. Donald Trump has warned of even more brutal attacks to come, while Benjamin Netanyahu says the bombing may continue for days.
The international community must prevent this volatile situation from escalating further. We cannot let Israel continue its reckless attacks that risk an all-out confrontation with Iran – guaranteeing a humanitarian catastrophe.
It is also the height of nuclear hypocrisy that Israel – which is not a signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and refuses any inspections of its nuclear facilities by the International Atomic Energy Agency – is not under any pressure to disarm its nuclear weapons. In fact, the British government has been granting export licences for Israel’s submarine programme, which is believed to house nuclear weapons.
Please make sure you join CND and the Palestine Coalition tomorrow, Saturday 14 June, at this emergency demonstration. We need to join the international community urging Israel to stop the bombing. We need to call out the nuclear hypocrisy. And we need to put even more pressure on the British government to impose a full arms embargo.
