The images of the riots engulfing Los Angeles are shocking — but also familiar. We’ve seen it before. Left-wing thugs are assaulting police officers, looting stores, and burning cars, all while waving foreign flags and burning the Stars and Stripes. Liberal reporters are pretending it’s “mostly peaceful.” Democrat politicians, who know the rioters are their base, are keeping silent.
Republican politicians are saying the right things, as they always have: backing the blue, condemning the violence, and calling on blue state and local officials to do their jobs. But even squishy Establishment Republicans always said the right things. They just never did anything to back up their words.
That is what Donald Trump changed.
Since the L.A. violence started, the president has sent the National Guard and the U.S. Marine Corps to protect the city and the ICE agents the rioters are targeting. He’s doing what strong executives do when faced with insurrections, invasions, and crises. He’s leading.
Senate Conservatives are, too — especially the two senators from the Show Me State of Missouri.
On Tuesday, Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) introduced a bill to impose a 15% tax on remittance payments immigrants send back to their home countries. “America is not the world’s piggy bank,” Schmitt said. It’s bad enough that illegal aliens are here violating our laws, but their remittance payments also siphon money out of our economy. Taxing remittances will not only discourage illegal immigration, but it will also recoup some of the costs of deporting them! Schmitt’s bill is a powerful weapon against illegal immigration: past, present, and future.
Meanwhile, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) is digging into the dark-money groups funding the woke insurrectionists in Los Angeles.
Hawley is chairman of the Senate Subcommittee on Crime and Terrorism. On Wednesday, he wrote to two left-wing organizations about their "alleged role in financially and materially supporting” the riots. “Let me be clear,” Chairman Hawley wrote, “bankrolling civil unrest is not protected speech.”
Hawley called on the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights and the Party for Socialism and Liberation to preserve their financial documents for his investigation — or else.
This is how a country fights back against a mob of fanatics trying to destroy it from within. In the short term, with moral force and courage like President Trump and the cops and troops he’s sending in. And in the long term, with dogged investigations, criminal prosecutions, and major policy reforms.
The fact is, America has been under attack for years. For the first time in a long time — thanks to President Trump and Senate conservatives — we’re finally fighting back.
