Legislative Update

Dear Neighbors,

This year’s Legislative Session has officially wrapped and what a year it’s been! Session was filled with unexpected twists and turns, frustrating delays, moments of success, and valuable lessons learned.

Despite Republicans only holding one half of one-third of the state government (and following two years of total DFL control) we were able to secure real, meaningful wins for Minnesotans. Here are a few highlights:

✅ *Ending Free Health Insurance for Undocumented Adults* We repealed the benefit of free MinnesotaCare for undocumented adult immigrants—a benefit not available to most citizens in our state. This reform restores fairness and fiscal responsibility to the program.

✅ *Largest Spending Cut in State History* We achieved a $5 billion spending cut - Minnesota’s largest ever. While it comes on the heels of historically high government growth, this move is an essential first step in restoring economic competitiveness and respecting taxpayers.

✅ *Blocking Radical Tax Increases* Even after the DFL burned through an $18 billion surplus and created a $6 billion deficit, we held the line against extreme new taxes. The only notable tax increases were tied to legalized cannabis and the repeal of a credit for data centers. This was a major win for working families and job creators.

✅ *Education Finance Wins* In my favorite committee, we protected non-public pupil aid, defended homeschool families from burdensome mandates, and increased support for local schools by expanding consolidation aid and funding educational innovation.

Given the political dynamics at play in St. Paul, these accomplishments are no small feat.

Still, there is much work ahead. Small businesses and startups are overwhelmed by costly regulations. And counties and schools face unfunded mandates that will ultimately trickle down to you, our property taxpayers. Unless this changes, we risk driving more Minnesotans and job creators to other states.

Many in the majority still claim we have a “revenue” problem. But the last two years have proven otherwise. We have a spending problem. It's time to return to common-sense fiscal policy and get our state back on track.

There are important fights ahead, but I’m encouraged by the progress we've made, and I remain committed to protecting your freedom, your finances, and your future. It’s an honor to represent Chisago County and the shared values that make our community strong.
