That fiery refrain rippled across Manhattan’s arteries Tuesday night, rising from a swelling tide of demonstrators encircling the city’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) command post.
Their unified uproar was part of a sprawling nationwide wave resisting President Trump’s aggressive immigration dragnet and military deployment in California.
Among the swarm of citizens defying the crackdown was Jeanet, a 19-year-old with dreams of donning a military uniform herself. “There are countless folks from my neighborhood too paralyzed by fear to step outside — I march on their behalf,” she told NPR, her voice trembling yet resolute.
Her surname, withheld by request, stays shrouded for her safety. Yet her conviction pierced through. “If I’m preparing to serve this country, then I must speak when it turns against its own,” she expressed, standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the masses in lower Manhattan.
