Friend, what we’re witnessing in Los Angeles is a dangerous escalation of authoritarian tactics. It is an unconscionable attack on our immigrant neighbors, and it is a threat to our Democracy at large.

Over the weekend, ICE agents carried out brutal raids in LA, targeting families attending school graduations, and workers at Home Depot. Disguised in masks and camouflage, they tore community members from their homes and jobs and even took a fourth grader into custody.

In response, thousands of people showed up to support their fellow community members. The administration met the protests with state violence, including tear gas and flash bang grenades that left people injured. President Trump quickly moved to inflame the situation by declaring he was sending in the National Guard, bypassing the consent of the California Governor, a massive overreach on states’ rights. Now apparently, they’ve called in the Marines.

Friend, we are in a perilous moment. The Trump administration is inching closer to invoking the Insurrection Act to unleash the military on immigrant communities and send troops into our neighborhoods.

This is a moment for everyone to act.

If you can do so safely, join a peaceful protest in your community. Otherwise, email your members of Congress. They are about to vote on a budget that would hand the Trump administration an additional $150 billion — money that would fuel these violent raids and escalate the assault on our communities and our rights.
