John, I should be in the classroom right now.
I should be wrapping up the final days of this school year and feeling the excitement for summer break. Instead, I'm working long days and weekends organizing educators for safe kids and families.
I was a second grade teacher at Sandy Hook School in Newtown, CT, during one of the worst school shootings in our history. The ripple effects were deep, widespread, and everlasting.
And families everywhere worry about the safety of their kids — not just in school, but outside the school gates — in parks, grocery stores, homecomings, sporting events.
So I knew that I must do more, because schools can and must be a safe space for learning, John.
Although I'm no longer in the classroom, I'm still caring for kids. Teachers Unify is committed to changing the unacceptable fact that gun violence is the leading cause of death for children and teens in America.
