John,
When President Trump activated the Marines in LA the other day, it crossed a clear line in the sand.
Throughout our nation's history, our military has upheld a clear distinction between civilian law enforcement and federal military power.
And apparently this step went too far for some in his party. After Issue One helped elevate the voice of a veteran in Maine [1] to let Sen. Collins know that they were disappointed in the politicization of the military and the danger of it being used for partisan plays, Collins broke with Trump on the deployment of Marines in LA, saying: “Active duty forces are generally not to be involved in domestic law enforcement operations.” [2]
Deploying federal troops over a state’s objection — especially without a clearly defined national emergency — risks turning legitimate authority into a tool for political escalation. That should concern every American, regardless of party.
Our Check the Exec campaign is in full swing and it’s clear that our advocacy and work in the states is working. Sen. Collins speaking up against many in her party is just one example of the impact our work is having. Together we’re mobilizing — and it’s making a difference.
I hope you’ll join me and my colleagues tonight at 7:30pm ET as we debrief the Issue One community on this latest development, what’s driving the escalating constitutional crisis, discuss our Check the Exec campaign, and ways you can take action to make your voice heard to help protect our democracy.
Register now and tune in tonight!
Hope to see you tonight,
Alix Fraser Vice President of Advocacy
