Hi Friends of 5 Gyres,
On the heels of World Ocean Day, we’re reflecting on how far we’ve come. The 5 Gyres story started in the ocean, when our co-founder sailed from Los Angeles to Hawaii on a JUNK Raft made of 15,000 plastic bottles. We led expeditions to all five subtropical gyres, where plastic pollution accumulates, leading groundbreaking research that revealed more than 170 trillion plastic particles are floating on the ocean's surface. But that's just the tip of the iceberg, as these pervasive particles make their way into our air, food, and bodies. Fifteen years later, we've charted a new course, shifting our sails upstream to tackle plastic pollution at its source — not only preserving the ocean’s future, but safeguarding our own health.
Our team kicked off Ocean Month in Washington D.C., where advocates and 5 Gyres Ambassadors from across the nation joined our Microplastic-Free US Hill Days. We met with Senators and Representatives from seven states to share a deep dive into the dangers of microplastic pollution and offer real, science-backed solutions. If you haven’t yet, make your voice heard by demanding action on microplastics!
