Join the Busybodies Club on Wednesday, June 11 at 5pm ET for From FYP to Feed: The Birth Control Misinformation On Your Timeline, a deep dive into the state of birth control misinformation online. We’ll be joined by health researchers Cambray Smith and Brooke Whitfield who will discuss research on birth control misinformation, including what platforms it’s common on, how to recognize it, and how to counter it.

Cambray Smith is an MD-PhD candidate in Health Policy and Management at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Her research focuses on how to help clinicians talk to adolescents and young adults about online contraceptive information. She previously worked in biomedical ethics research where her work focused on how to talk to patients about unproven therapies. Her dissertation project uses Reddit data to understand what young people and caregivers want to know about contraception. In the future, she plans to practice as a physician and continue conducting research.

Brooke Whitfield is a PhD candidate in Sociology at the University of Texas at Austin and the Evaluation Manager at Power to Decide. Her research examines how young people in the U.S. learn about and make decisions regarding contraception and abortion. She has conducted studies on how restrictive Texas policies affect people’s ability to access contraception and abortion in the state, where young people receive their contraceptive information, and how young people navigate rising STI rates. Currently, she co-leads a study on how people talk about contraceptive side effects on TikTok.

The Busybodies Club is a national long-term campaign to educate young people on sexual health and reproductive rights topics. This campaign works to fight common misconceptions, eliminate confusion, and debunk sex education myths.
