Dear John,
Right to the City Alliance stands in solidarity with the people of Los Angeles and all communities under attack across the country who are being scapegoated by the Trump regime. The streets of Los Angeles are filled with everyday people–parents, workers, neighbors, and students defending their community against authoritarian attacks from the federal government in ways we haven’t seen in decades. They are making the only reasonable response to what we all can clearly see is state sanctioned terror: they are denying law enforcement from detaining people in workplaces, restaurants, community spaces, and their very own homes with zero due process. ICE raids are state sponsored displacement, pure and simple.
The activation of the National Guard and the mobilization of the Marines to Los Angeles, Trump’s meeting with the military leadership today and this Saturday’s military parade in D.C. represents an accelerating escalation towards authoritarianism that we must resist.
We call on our elected officials, judges, journalists and media outlets and every organization and institution with a commitment to community and social good to use every instrument at their disposal to demand that the military not be turned against the people.
Authoritarianism is dependent on division and fear. Our response has to be connection and unity.
Our power lies in the unity of everyday people standing shoulder to shoulder to protect and defend one another, our neighborhoods and our right to live free from state violence. All of us–not just the wealthy and powerful–deserve to be safe in our communities, whether we are renters, union leaders or day laborers. Now more than ever we can and must exercise our rights to free speech, assembly, and to hold our government accountable.
Right to the City Alliance and our members will organize, we will be in the streets, we will do everything possible to fight this escalation against our movements, our communities and our immigrant relatives, neighbors and loved ones .
