John,
Throughout our nation's history, our military has upheld a clear distinction between civilian law enforcement and federal military power.
But this weekend, President Trump sent 2,000 National Guard troops into California — overriding Gov. Newsom’s objection — and new reporting says that 700 Marines have been “activated” in Los Angeles. [1] Deploying federal troops over a state’s objection — especially without a clearly defined national emergency — risks turning legitimate authority into a tool for political escalation. That should concern every American, regardless of party.
Here at Issue One, we’re concerned by the growing disregard for the rule of law, weakening congressional oversight, and the fact that the presidency is becoming more powerful than ever. We know you’re concerned too and wondering what we can do to push back against overreach and abuses of power.
That’s why we want you to join us this Wednesday at 7:30pm ET for a 30-minute webinar where we’ll discuss these recent events and others that are threatening our democracy and driving the escalating constitutional crisis, what Issue One is doing to address it through our Check the Exec campaign, and ways you can take action to make your voice heard.
We are in increasingly unprecedented times and our democracy feels fragile. We hope you’ll join us to learn about what we’re up to and how we can work to protect our democracy together.
In solidarity, The Issue One Team
