John, Pride Month is a month to celebrate our LGBTQ+ community – it’s also a time to reaffirm our commitment to the equity, freedom, and safety of our queer and transgender communities.

Right now, critical gender-affirming care is under attack by the very same budget legislation that makes the biggest cuts to Medicaid in history.

I’m not going to sugar coat it, John: This is bad and very scary.

The House’s recently-passed budget bill contains a dangerous and downright discriminatory amendment that prohibits Medicaid from funding life-saving care for transgender people. This includes gender-affirming care, like hormone therapy and surgery, that helps transgender people feel more at home in their body.

Over 275,000 transgender people who rely on Medicaid would be entirely cut off from the care that they need to live authentically as themselves.

It’s not just gender-affirming care – all of our care is under threat. An attack on one of us is an attack on all of us! LGBTQ+ people deserve to receive the health care they need to live their lives with dignity and autonomy.

The fight to protect Medicaid is not over, and the budget is now being deliberated by the Senate. We need to make it clear to our elected leaders that we won’t accept cuts to Medicaid in any shape or form.

We’re stronger when we have one another’s back. When we rise up in support of our LGBTQ+ community members, we fight for a more caring world for all of us.

We aren’t done fighting because the lives of millions of transgender, queer, disabled, and aging people depend on it.
