Back in April, I had the incredible honor of addressing world leaders at the United Nations during negotiations over the Global Ocean Treaty — an ambitious treaty to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030.

I didn’t go as a scientist or diplomat. I went as someone who’s spent her life fighting to protect people and the planet, and as someone who believes we are running out of time.

I told them exactly what I want to tell you now, John:

We are living in a world that feels increasingly divided. Nationalism is rising. Trust in institutions is eroding. The very idea of global cooperation is being questioned. And all the while, corporate polluters are exploiting our oceans and treating them as bottomless dumping grounds.

But the truth is: We are not powerless against the challenges we’re facing.

The Global Ocean Treaty is a beacon of hope in these turbulent times. It shows that when we focus on our common humanity and our dependence on a healthy planet, we can push back against the tide of extraction and corporate greed.

That’s where you come in. If you do one thing today for World Ocean Day, let it be this: Add your name to our petition demanding world leaders keep their promise to protect 30% of the ocean by 2030. [[link removed]]

Protecting nature from those who prioritize profit can feel impossible, but we must remember: Despair is not an option. We can't retreat into our corners. The challenge we face from the climate crisis to the destruction of biodiversity transcends borders.

The high seas cover half of the planet. They are home to so much beauty and wonder, and they support every living being, including all of you reading this email.

This fight isn't just about protecting the ocean. It's about protecting ourselves and recognizing that the fate of humanity is inextricably linked to the health of the natural world.

Every delay, every broken promise, brings us closer to the point of no return. But I believe in us and this grassroots movement. I believe that millions of people around the world, the ones who can’t speak at the United Nations, sign petitions, or march in protest, are counting on us to keep going.

So today, I hope you’ll add your name and raise your voice. Let’s show the world that we’re still willing to fight for something larger than ourselves. [[link removed]]
