John,
The Trump administration abruptly cut a 60-year-old program called Job Corps, which provided 25,000 young people each year with stable housing, meals, career training, high school equivalency classes, trade certifications, and job placement assistance.
Now teenagers are being kicked out on the streets with only hours’ notice, carrying their belongings in trash bags with nowhere to go.
The sudden closure of Job Corps centers around the country has left thousands of students devastated and unhoused. In Michigan alone, more than 700 students were relying on this lifeline for stability, direction, and opportunities to get out of poverty. In my home city of Detroit, 217 students were in this program, and many were preparing to graduate after years of hard work.
I joined several of my Michigan colleagues in a letter to the Trump administration demanding that they immediately reverse this reckless decision.
Following this pressure, a U.S. judge temporarily blocked the elimination of Job Corps, noting that presidential administrations aren’t allowed to end programs that are set up and funded by Congress. But the Trump administration has been ignoring court orders, so we need to keep the pressure on.
Will you add your name as a grassroots co-signer to our Congressional letter today, demanding Trump restore Job Corps and keep 25,000 students in their homes?
Already, youth homelessness is at an all-time high. Around 150,000 children are without homes, and homelessness is on the rise. Most Americans can barely afford their rent and are living paycheck to paycheck.
Meanwhile, Trump and other Republicans are trying to slash housing assistance and other life-saving programs—all to pay for tax cuts to billionaires and to line the pockets of their corporate donors.
Instead, I’m pushing to put money directly in the pockets of our young unhoused neighbors (the Youth Homelessness Guaranteed Income Pilot Program Act) and families with children (the End Child Poverty Act).
I’ve also passed legislation to expand homeownership opportunities and fund home repairs, and I’m leading fights for tenants’ rights and to guarantee access to utilities such as water and power.
I’ll use every tool I can to secure the human right to housing for all, fight back against Trump’s attacks on our communities, and restore funding for crucial programs like Job Corps.
Cutting programs like Job Corps is not only cruel, it’s also illegal and unconstitutional. As a U.S. federal judge just confirmed, Congress authorized the funding for Job Corps and the president does not have the authority to snap his fingers and cut that funding.
Please join me today by adding your name as a grassroots co-signer to our Congressional letter demanding Trump restore the vital Job Corps program nationwide.
Thank you for taking action. Together, we have the power to fight back and demand a government of, by, and for the people.
With you in the fight against fascism and for a better future,
Rashida
