EARTHJUSTICE
Earthjustice January 2022 newsletter
Dear Friend,
As we fight the Trump administration’s attacks on the environment, we are celebrating the victories you've helped us achieve.
We are still winning in courts at all levels — including abroad — and getting important new legislation passed in the states. Thank you for making all of this possible!
Iowa Farm with Cows
First Big Win Against Trump 2.0
After Earthjustice and our partners filed a lawsuit, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reversed course and committed to restore climate-focused webpages purged from its websites. The USDA erased entire climate sections from the U.S. Forest Service and Natural Resources Conservation Service websites, including information helping farmers access billions of dollars for critical conservation practices. This purge hurt communities across the country by depriving farmers, researchers, and advocates of the resources they need to make time-sensitive farming decisions and participate in highly consequential debates about USDA funding and policies related to climate change. We stand ready to ensure that USDA follows through on its promise to restore these crucial resources.

A Historic Victory in Louisiana’s Cancer Alley

For nearly a decade, residents of St. John the Baptist Parish, Louisiana have fought tirelessly for something most people take for granted: the right to breathe clean air. In 2018 the EPA released data showing that a census tract in St. John faced the highest cancer risk from toxic air pollution in the nation — 85% of it traced to a single facility owned by Denka, a multinational chemical manufacturer.

Residents organized, marched, petitioned, sued, and even traveled across the globe to confront the company poisoning their community. Now, they’ve won a long-overdue reprieve.

On May 13, 2025, Denka announced it suspended production at its St. John facility due to mounting financial losses. Denka said it does not intend to restart operations for an indefinite period. Throughout the fight, Earthjustice represented community groups in St. John.

No Fossil Fuel Favoritism from FERC
After comments from Earthjustice and our partners, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) rightly rejected a proposal to fast-track connection of utility-owned methane gas projects over the queue of clean energy projects that have been waiting years to connect to the grid. FERC’s role as an independent agency is to protect consumers and ensure reliable affordable energy. The best way to do that is to let clean energy compete fairly and openly.

Lead Pipe Removal
Securing Safe, Lead-Free Drinking Water
A Republican-run Congress attempted to repeal lead exposure protections, endangering millions of lives in the U.S. We fought back — and won.

Nearly 22 million people across all 50 states still drink water through lead pipes. That problem was finally set to get solved with the passage of a key regulation last year and a significant funding stream to replace all the remaining lead pipes in America. Then, suddenly, that progress was in jeopardy. Republicans introduced a bill in Congress to repeal the regulation, endangering millions of U.S. lives. But thanks to public pressure, the bill missed a critical deadline, protecting the progress made on this issue.
