Recently, I was asked if we’ll ever recover from the damage Donald Trump is doing to our country.

The reality is, some things may take a generation to overcome—like the collapse in global respect for the American people or the wholesale destruction of our institutions.

But I would say something else: so many of the systems we’ve inherited needed to be changed and shaken up for a long time.

That does not make it acceptable to burn them to the ground, the way the Trump administration is doing.

But it does mean that when the time comes to pick up the pieces and decide where to go from here, the project for the American people can’t just be to go back.

It has to be to build something new and better—on different terms.

Our task is to build what’s needed for the rest of the 21st century, not to tape together the shattered pieces of the 20th.
