Today is World Food Safety Day, john.
I’m thinking about the hardworking farmers and growers who make food safety possible.
Here in Washington’s 8th District, agriculture isn’t just an industry—it’s a way of life. Our district has a rich and proud legacy of growing apples, cherries, and more. The farms and the farmers who keep them running have helped power our local economy for generations.
But they do more than that, john: They help put food on tables across this country and the world. That’s why I’m furious that the Trump administration and Congressional Republicans are trying to gut agriculture funding while ignoring the devastating consequences for working Americans. And that’s on top of the tariff wars that have an outsized impact on US agriculture.
The proposed Republican budget would slash nearly $7 billion from the USDA. That includes over $1 billion cut from farm production and conservation programs, as well as over $2 billion stripped from rural development. Programs that support crop insurance, clean energy initiatives, and even basic food safety inspections are all on the chopping block.
john, these cuts would hurt Washington’s 8th District. They’d hurt our farmers. They’d hurt our rural communities. And they’d hurt families across the country who rely on our growers to safely and sustainably feed the nation. Frankly, it doesn’t just dishearten me—it downright pisses me off. But time and time again, Republicans have shown that they’ll side with corporate interests over working families—even if it means dismantling the very backbone of American agriculture.
I’m standing firm in Congress against these reckless proposals. But the truth is, we won’t stop the GOP’s carnage unless we take back the House. That’s where you come in. Chip in $5, or anything you can, to help me power this campaign and flip the House blue in 2026. >>
