Honoring the Unsung Heroes of D-Day
Yesterday marked the anniversary of D-Day—June 6, 1944, the largest amphibious invasion in history and a turning point in World War II. It’s a day forever etched in our collective memory, marked by images of stormy beaches, fierce determination, and extraordinary bravery.
While history rightly remembers the commanding generals and the front-line heroes who charged into battle, the full story of D-Day includes countless acts of quiet courage that too often go untold—stories of medics, codebreakers, combat engineers, resistance fighters, and even animals who played critical roles in the success of the Allied invasion.
At Soldiers’ Angels, we believe every act of service matters, and this D-Day, we pay tribute to the unsung heroes—those whose names may not have made the headlines, but whose bravery shaped the course of history.
In our latest blog, we invite you to explore these remarkable stories:
The codebreakers whose brilliance turned tides behind the scenes
The French Resistance fighters who sabotaged enemy lines from within
The 320th Barrage Balloon Battalion, an all-Black Army unit whose efforts shielded troops from enemy aircraft
The combat medics and nurses who fought with compassion under fire
The women of the SOE who parachuted into occupied France to gather intelligence and lead sabotage missions
And yes—even the parachuting dogs and heroic pigeons who made their mark on history
Their courage was quiet, but their legacy changed the course of history.

As we remember D-Day, let us honor every hero—known and unknown—and recommit ourselves to telling their stories, celebrating their courage, and ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.
As we reflect on the quiet bravery that shaped D-Day, we’re reminded that service and sacrifice continue—not just in history books, but in the lives of those deployed around the world today.
One of the most meaningful ways to honor the heroes of the past is to show up for the Service Members of the present.
Right now, 548 deployed Service Members are still waiting to be adopted through Soldiers’ Angels—each one hoping for a letter, a care package, or simply a reminder that they’re not forgotten.
Thanks to your incredible response last week, that number is already down from 683—but we’re not done yet. Every act of support keeps their morale strong and their connection to home alive.
Because history has taught us: we never know when the next D-Day may come. But we can choose, every day, to honor courage with action.

There’s nothing like seeing the smile of a deployed Service Member opening a care package. It’s a powerful reminder of how much support from home truly matters.
"I want to sincerely thank you for all the letters and care packages I’ve received—they have truly meant a lot to me during my deployment. Your support has been a source of comfort and encouragement. Thank you, and the team for putting smiles on our faces! And being so kind hearted."
💌 Ladies Supporting Ladies:
Be a Light for a Caregiver
You don’t have to look overseas to make a powerful impact—some of our heroes are right here at home.
Through our Women of Valor program, Soldiers’ Angels volunteers support the incredible women caring for wounded, ill, and injured Service Members and Veterans. These caregivers often face emotional and physical challenges alone—and that’s where you come in.
We’re looking for compassionate women to lift up fellow women by sending uplifting cards and Blessing Boxes filled with love, encouragement, and a little joy.
Are you part of a women’s group, Bunco club, or sorority? This is a great opportunity for individuals or groups!
Women of Valor is a meaningful way for groups of women to come together and support fellow women. Right now, 62 caregivers are waiting for support, and we’d love to see women-led groups step up this month to ensure every one of them is lifted up with cards, encouragement, and Blessing Boxes.
If you’re interested in getting your group involved, click More Info below to email our volunteer team. Be sure to include “Women of Valor” in your subject line so we can get you started!

🎂 Making Birthdays Sweeter—Even While Deployed
Birthdays during deployment often pass quietly—but not for this Soldier.
Thanks to our partner Bake Me A Wish!, we delivered a gourmet cake to a deployed Service Member and brought unexpected joy:
“Thank you so much for the delicious package! It brightened my birthday gloom... I also got promoted today, so it was a great way to end the day!” — SSG, U.S. Army
It’s more than just cake—it’s a reminder they’re not forgotten.
Volunteering, One Step at a Time
Volunteering doesn’t have to be loud or social to be meaningful.
In this heartfelt blog, Soldiers’ Angels volunteer/Veteran Intern, Dallas, shares what it’s like to navigate social anxiety while giving back—starting with letter writing and eventually finding peace and purpose in the Healing Garden at the San Antonio Polytrauma facility.
Whether you’re someone who prefers quiet acts of service or you're just beginning your own journey, this story is a powerful reminder that every step forward counts.
