also increases gun violence!

Dear Friend,
It’s June, National Gun Violence Awareness Month. The most critical and
timely thing everyone needs to be aware of this year – and at this moment
– is that more gun violence is part of the ridiculously bad Republican
budget and tax package due to be voted on in the U.S. Senate in a few
short weeks.
Buried in the bill is an NRA-sponsored measure that would abolish the $200
tax on silencers that’s been in place since 1934. The bill would also end
background checks and registration requirements for silencer
purchases.[ [link removed] ]
With guns already the leading cause of death for our children and young
adults,[ [link removed] ] we don’t need silencers, which reduce the noise of a firearm,
flooding into our communities and making our gun violence epidemic even
worse.
[1]SIGN NOW: Tell U.S. Senators to vote NO on the Republican budget and
tax bill which, among other awful provisions like cutting health care for
tens of millions of people, also increases gun violence by deregulating
silencers.
Silencers are dangerous to our children and communities, and have no
business being in a budget and tax bill. With silencers, imagine how much
more lethal a mass shooting would be if the shooter could hide the sound
of gunfire. With silencers, imagine how much easier any shooting could be
concealed, vastly facilitating and encouraging armed crime. If you were
near a shooting muffled by a silencer, how would you know to run? How
would anyone, including law enforcement, know that a shooting is even
happening without the sound of gunfire until long after the shooter has
gotten away?
Let’s be clear – we are against this entire bad bill. While widespread use
of silencers would make gun violence even worse, President Trump’s and
Congressional Republicans' so-called “big, beautiful bill” is actually a
big, bad betrayal of the American public: It makes deep cuts to Medicaid,
taking away health care from millions, including the health care many
victims need to recover from gun wounds. Every year, gun violence
generates more than $1 billion in initial medical costs.[ [link removed] ] In addition,
this bill slashes food stamps/SNAP, K-12 education, and child care
funding,[ [link removed] ] all in order to give massive tax cuts to billionaires and
wealthy corporations. It’s not big and beautiful. It’s awful, a betrayal
of the American people, and deadly!
More gun violence with less health care is yet another reason for the U.S.
Senate to block it.
[2]Tell U.S. Senators to vote NO on the Republican budget and tax bill,
not least because it would increase gun violence by deregulating
silencers.
With more guns than people, and more gun violence than all other peer
countries combined, the United States is now the least-free wealthy
democracy in the world.
The pervasiveness of guns and gun violence is chipping away at our freedom
to learn, play, worship, shop, and live in our communities without fear.
Flooding our communities with silencers that conceal deadly gun fire would
add to that fear exponentially. [3]We say NO to the Republican budget and
tax bill.
Please forward this message to everyone you know who agrees that gun
violence is a public health emergency and ask them to sign on too, and to
share their thoughts on the freedoms we are losing to gun violence.
In safety and community,
Gloria, Jessica, Elyssa, Kristin, and the entire MomsRising/MamásConPoder
team
**IMPORTANT P.S.**
In addition to signing the petition, please share with us your thoughts
about how the fear and worry of gun violence has impacted your life,
either [4]here or on the petition page. What freedoms and rights do you
feel you have lost to the perceived Second Amendment right for anyone to
own guns anywhere and everywhere, with no restrictions?
