Weekend Reading
Hi Friend,
As the hunger crisis worsens in Gaza, our team is doing everything they can to deliver lifesaving aid. Working with local partners, they are sourcing food and other essentials from within Gaza. Over the past few weeks, we have provided more than 4,000 meals daily to displaced families living in makeshift camps and schools that have been turned into shelters. We are so grateful to everyone for your continued support. Every meal served, every jug of water provided, every hygiene kit delivered is crucial in this moment. To hear more from AFSC staff, partners, and people in Gaza, watch this video. [link removed]
FEDERAL POLICY
What you need to know about the new travel ban [link removed]
By Mike Merryman-Lotze
Earlier this week, the Trump administration instituted a new travel ban. The executive order bars people from 12 countries from entering the U.S. and imposes restrictions on people from seven additional countries. Banning people from the U.S. based on their country of origin is racist and immoral and must be categorically opposed. Read more. [link removed]
TAKE ACTION
Protect Medicaid and SNAP—and reject tax breaks for the rich! [link removed]
The U.S. Senate is now considering a budget reconciliation bill that would result in the largest transfer of wealth from the poor to the rich in U.S. history. It would strip away health care and food assistance from millions of people. And it would extend tax breaks for the wealthy, including the richest 1%. Tell Congress: Reject cuts to SNAP and Medicaid and prioritize programs for people in need! Act now to end the genocide in Sudan [link removed]
Congress will soon vote on blocking arms sales to the United Arab Emirates. The UAE has continued to supply weapons to forces committing genocide in Sudan, and the U.S. must end its complicity in these atrocities. With over 60,000 dead, 12 million displaced, and famine spreading, we need immediate action from our representatives. Please contact Congress today and urge them to stop weapons sales to the UAE! AFSC STATEMENT
Ending violence locally and globally [link removed]
As a Quaker organization, AFSC firmly opposes violence in all its forms. We condemn recent acts of violence against people in Boulder, Colorado, and the killings of two Israeli Embassy staffers in Washington, D.C. We also continue to advocate for an end to the genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. We hold everyone facing violence, repression, and suffering in the Light. Ending violence—in the U.S. and around the world—means building a future in which all people have freedom, equality, and justice. Read more. [link removed]
YOUTH LEADERSHIP
Youth in L.A. uphold a history of resistance [link removed]
By Adalberto Rios and Crystal Gonzalez
In the face of increased immigration enforcement, young people from immigrant communities in L.A. are learning skills to organize for change. AFSC’s Freedom Schools are multiday workshops that help youth understand and act on their own power. They learn about historical movements for change and how to respond to the injustices they face today. That includes preparing for ICE raids, understanding their rights, and advocating for elected officials to do more to protect all community members.
Special thanks to our monthly donors, our Partners for Peace, for their ongoing support to make all our work possible.
