Dear Neighbor,
Across America, prices are soaring. Groceries, electronics, clothes and other products are more expensive than ever. Many economists have shown that these increases are directly attributable to President Trump’s economic policies, specifically his tariff policies.
Overwhelmingly, when prices increase because of a tariff, companies pass the higher costs onto their customers. But some people have been led to believe that the price of the tariff is paid for by the foreign country, which could not be further from the truth. That’s why I am leading the Truth in Tariffs Act with Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) so we can get some truth in advertising about tariffs.
The legislation requires large companies (not small businesses, for whom it is optional) to clearly display the portion of an item’s price that is due to tariffs. The legislation treats a tariff like a national sales tax and requires factual disclosure of the specific price differential passed on to consumers.
This legislation advances basic consumer rights and government transparency. Consumers have a right to know precisely why prices for every day essential items are increasing and how much.
Along with my Democratic colleagues in the House, I am fighting to lower the cost of everyday goods so that Americans don’t have to pay more money for fewer products.
We’re working to put the power back where it belongs: in the hands of American consumers.
