Tree ID Walk - Appleton

Join Georges River Land Trust and Maine Forest Service for an exploration of Appleton Preserve. Maine Forest Service District Forester Allyssa Gregory will lead tree identification on this guided hike. Participants will learn to identify tree species by looking at form, branching arrangement, buds, bark, and present foliage. Woodland appreciators should leave with a knowledge of Maine's native trees, practical tree identification skills, and insights into forest stewardship. Wear comfortable closed-toed shoes and bring your insect repellent of choice. Join us for a guided tree identification walk! 

*Directions & Parking:* From the intersection of Routes 131 and 105 in Appleton, go east on Route 105 for mile. Parking is available at the ME Inland Fisheries & Wildlife gravel lot on the right, just before the bridge across the Georges River. Please do not park in the Blue Crow Studio driveway or use it as a turnaround!

Ash Tree Woodland Walk - Union

*Event Type:* Workshop/Training 

Join Georges River Land Trust, Knox-Lincoln Soil & Water Conservation District, and Maine Forest Service for an ash tree focused woodland walk. Maine Forest Service District Forester Allyssa Gregory will provide instructions on identifying ash species. Maine Forest Service Entomologist Colleen Teerling will present ways to identify emerald ash borer, management strategies for ash forests, and treatment options. Woodland stewards and appreciators should leave with a knowledge of Maine's ash species trees, practical tree identification skills, an understanding of emerald ash borer, treatments, and insights into stewarding a healthy ash forest. Please come prepared for a mile hike. Wear comfortable closed-toed shoes and bring your insect repellent of choice. Join us for a woodland walk! 

*Directions & Parking:* From Route 17 in Union, travel one mile north on Sennebec Road to a dirt road on the left (see map [ [link removed] ]). Drive down the dirt road to its end and park beyond the entrance to the driveway into the small gravel pit. At times, the dirt road is chained, so please park on the shoulder there and walk down the dirt road to the property.

Forest Improvements for Wildlife - Eustis

Take a tour of a pre-commercial thinning operation and learn the steps and considerations required to prepare for and conduct forest improvement. Topics discussed by presenters from Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, Maine Forest Service, and Maine Tree Farm include:

* Working with forestry professionals 

* Enhancing wildlife habitat 

* Tree Farm certification

Wildlife Forestry Tour - Guided Walk

Join MDIFW Forester Matt Rourke to learn how managing forests can create habitat for wildlife. Many acres in Maine were once historic farmland properties. When these pastures went fallow, turning back to wildlands, the forests grew in dense patches and often lacked the mixture of plants and space that native wildlife need. Through careful planning and various forestry techniques, biologists and foresters at MDIFW have been able to create more productive landscapes for various wildlife ranging from squirrels and songbirds to deer, rabbit, and moose. Come explore current and future project sites at the Frye Mountain Wildlife Management Area and learn just how our staff are creating long-lasting, productive landscapes for wildlife. You just might find some inspiration for your property.

Forestry for Maine Birds Workshop – Islesboro

District Forester Allyssa Gregory from the Maine State Forest Service, and Sally Stockwell with Maine Audubon will join Islesboro Island Trust (IIT) for this half day workshop to teach participants how to steward forests to encourage habitat for Maine's birds!  

Are you curious about how to create, or steward existing, habitat on your property to support Maine birds and wildlife, while also creating a safe and defensible space around your home? Sign-up to join IITs Forestry for Maine Birds workshop!  

This workshop will be about four hours, with a lunch break to chat and catch up. Bring your own lunch. IIT will provide dessert, snacks, coffee & tea!
