![]() It’s no big secret that so many Americans have lost faith in their government, even before this new Trump administration. I hear from so many folks who are fed up with the system, who feel like Congress is only working for themselves, not the American people. And it’s not particularly difficult to see why. Instead of letting the values of their constituents guide their votes, I’ve seen far too many of my colleagues allow wealthy special interests to steer their priorities. The vast majority of Americans support common sense gun safety legislation. But special interest groups like the NRA have blocked reform at every turn. And despite the fact that over 75% of Americans support Medicaid, Republicans in Congress are attempting to gut the program to appease their ultra-wealthy donors. Transparency and accountability are essential to a well-functioning, trustworthy government. That’s why I’ve been one of the most vocal advocates to ban stock trading by members of Congress. I even co-sponsored a bill that would shine a light on dark money in politics, break special interests’ stranglehold on Congress, and close loopholes for lobbyists. But if we want to restore trust in our government for good, we need to start by supporting real leaders in Congress, not more self-serving extremists.
