Friend,
Yesterday, we hosted a great conversation about governmental retaliation against free speech and free-speech advocates.
Author and journalist Wajahat Ali explained how we can look at the erosion of rights in countries like Hungary to understand the trajectory of the United States under Trump: “Once [Prime Minister Viktor Orban] got into power, they attacked three institutions in particular: the press, universities and the judiciary.”
Damon Hewitt, of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, gave us a way to understand the hatred and corruption unfolding around us: “It’s difficult to make sense of it except racism, except oligarchy, except autocracy.” He went on to say that Trump is going after powerful institutions like Harvard to send a chilling message to others.
Baher Azmy, of the Center for Constitutional Rights, tied together our discussion by saying, “Understand this: The USA — not unlike the Soviet Union or Hungary or Egypt — is saying that mere dissension from U.S. foreign policy makes you an enemy of the state … [in effect saying] we will disappear you.”
We will not back down in the face of these threats from our own government, and we know you won’t either.
We’ll be in touch with opportunities for you to fight for the future of freedom. Don't want to miss out? Sign up to make sure you're the first to hear about future Free Press webinars.
