Hi Reader,

On Monday, we began our two-week summer member drive, and I’m thrilled to say that already, more than 1,000 readers stepped up with a donation. Join them with your gift of any amount. <[link removed]> We need folks like you to support our deep-dive journalism that holds the powerful to account by shining a light on corruption and injustice.

We shine that light with a purpose: Our mission is to use the moral force of investigative journalism to spur change. Our work has led to laws being passed, people resigning from powerful positions, victims receiving compensation and much more. We carefully track the impact of our work. Here are a few recent examples of stories that led to action:

Lawmakers in at least seven states have sought expanded abortion access <[link removed]>, including some bills that were filed in direct response to ProPublica’s reporting on the fatal consequences of abortion bans.

Columbia University has agreed to a $750 million settlement with 576 patients <[link removed]> of a former doctor who sexually abused them while working at the school. In 2023, a ProPublica investigation, published with New York Magazine, revealed how Columbia had ignored women, undermined prosecutors and ultimately protected a predator <[link removed]>. Former OB-GYN Robert Hadden worked at the university for more than 20 years despite decades of complaints about him. The latest settlement, combined with payouts from previous cases, means that Columbia will have paid out more than $1 billion to resolve claims of sexual abuse by Hadden, who was convicted of sex crimes in federal court in January 2023 and is now serving a 20-year prison sentence.

The Department of Justice and eight states sued the maker of a rent-setting software <[link removed]> and six of the nation’s largest landlords <[link removed]> following our 2022 investigation into how the software’s algorithm boosts profits <[link removed]>. The lawsuit asserted that the software facilitated illegal price-fixing, reduced competition among landlords and resulted in higher rents. (Senior Vice President Jennifer Bowcock of the software maker, RealPage, called the federal case “flawed” and said the company is “committed to vigorously defending ourselves and our customers against the DOJ’s accusations.”)

We’ll never stop shining a light on abuses of power and breaches of the public trust in an effort to hold people in power accountable. And thanks to donations from folks like you, we’re growing larger, getting stronger and spurring more impact than ever before. Give today, and help ProPublica ensure that we continue to have the resources to follow the most important stories wherever they lead — for however long it takes. <[link removed]>

Thanks so much,

Tova Genesen <[link removed]>
