This year we have a rare chance to rewrite the global debt system. And it couldn’t be more urgent – we’re in the biggest debt crisis in thirty years.  

A critical United Nations conference is happening at the end of June, a once in ten-year opportunity for lower-income country governments and campaigners to make their voices heard.

In contrast to most international meetings where the debt crisis is discussed, the UN’s Financing for Development conference won’t be dominated by lenders with vested interests, lower-income country representatives will all have an equal say. It’s a rare chance for reform of the debt system through democratic processes – and strong demands from campaigners around the world could help tip the balance.

Right now, campaigners are mobilising in the biggest movement for debt justice in decades. It’s time to make sure decision-makers hear our demands for debt justice. 

As Absolom Jim, a Debt for Climate activist in Zimbabwe, explained at our recent webinar: 

“The debt crisis in Zimbabwe has had a devastating impact on communities, which is exacerbating poverty and limiting access to basic services. The burden of debt is not unique to our country - it’s a global issue that requires a unified response.” 

We’ll be at the conference in Seville, standing alongside allies who are demanding fundamental reforms to the broken debt system that could win justice for millions.
