On Friday of last week, in a ceremony at Washington Place, Governor Josh Green signed into law five bills that will expand access to educational opportunities and support student success both in the classroom and beyond — including Senate Bill 1300, which aims to improve educational outcomes by ensuring every child in Hawaii has access to the consistent nutrition they need to succeed in school.

“Food insecurity in our state is a serious issue, affecting one in three households,” Governor Green said. "Senate Bill 1300 will help ease the burden on our Hawaii ohana and improve the lives of keiki across the islands.”

Friday’s gathering included schoolchildren, teachers, and advocates to help Hawaii students get to school, get fed, and be better prepared to learn.

During the ceremony, First Lady Jaime Kanani Green spoke about the need to provide free lunches for children in need.

“It is so important to make sure our kids are fed and don’t go hungry,” she said. “Senate Bill 1300 removes the financial barrier to accessing school meals, supporting students’ health and well-being, as well as their academic and developmental success."

The bill appropriates more than $3.3 million to the Department of Education over the next two school years to cover the cost of free meals.

Starting in the coming school year, students who are eligible for reduced-price lunches will receive them for free beginning in the fall.

In the subsequent school year, schoolchildren from working, low-income families who earn below 300% of the federal poverty level also will get free lunches — and schools will also be prohibited from denying a meal to any student who cannot pay.

“Students should come to class hungry for knowledge, not hungry for food,” Josh said.
