In total, President Trump has pardoned or commuted the sentences of 16 elected politicians convicted of corruption offenses: seven at the federal level and nine at the state and local level.

John, as a former federal corruption prosecutor, I can say with certainty that this pardon spree is unprecedented and will cause real harm to public trust.

Trump’s pardons are sending a clear message: corruption convictions are not serious and should not come with serious consequences, particularly for politicians loyal to Trump. Here are the toplines:

* Eight of these politicians had their sentences significantly reduced — allowing them to evade roughly 50 and a half years of prison time.
* The pardons wiped out guilty pleas or convictions for 125 counts of corruption-related crimes ranging from bribery and fraud to acting as a foreign agent and insider trading.
* They covered about $7.4 million of ill-gotten gains or misused funds.

Trump’s pardons in both his first and second term have shown his indifference to the harm corrupt politicians have caused the American public— and display his use of the presidency to benefit his allies.

Like in 2020, when he gave a conditional pardon to Representative Randall “Duke” Cunningham, who pleaded guilty to conspiring to accept bribes while serving as a member of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee— and had a “bribe menu” with prices for political favors.

That same year, he pardoned former Representative Duncan Hunter— one of the first members of Congress to endorse Trump’s first presidential run —who was sentenced to 11 months in prison after being convicted of misusing more than $150,000 of campaign funds for personal benefit.

Now, he’s continuing this pattern of decriminalizing political corruption.

Trump pardoned former Virginia sheriff Scott Jenkins, who faced 10 years in prison following his conviction for accepting $75,000 in bribes, before he even started his sentence.

He also pardoned former Nevada politician Michele Fiore, allowing her to avoid prison altogether despite being convicted of stealing funds meant to honor two slain police officers. She faced up to a 140-year sentence.

But Trump’s efforts to decriminalize corruption go beyond pardons: his Department of Justice dropped charges against two other former elected officials and largely dismantled its section responsible for investigating and prosecuting corruption cases nationwide.

John, this isn’t just about some pardons. Trump is undermining our democracy and opening the door for further corruption in our government by weakening accountability and shielding political allies from consequences.

That’s why CREW is fighting to demand accountability and restore trust in our government.
