You've found a wildlife baby; now what?

It's that time of year: Young wildlife, including songbirds, deer and rabbits, are growing and gaining strength — and you may happen upon one.

Don't be alarmed if it appears to be alone or abandoned. Its mother may be away feeding or drinking, and some species, like rabbits, visit their young less often to avoid drawing predators to their nest.

Commissioners to consider 2026 mountain lion season

At its June 13 meeting in Sidney, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will consider recommendations for a 2026 mountain lion hunting season.

The meeting begins at 8 a.m. Mountain time at the Country Inn and Suites, located at 664 Chase Blvd; the public is welcome to attend. Staff's recommendations include adjusted harvest limits compared to the 2025 season.

Heads up, hunters: Both residents and nonresidents may apply for a draw status Nebraska deer permit in certain areas between June 2-13. Nebraska Game and Parks needs to receive your application by 5 p.m. Central time on June 13, or by 11:59 p.m. that day for online applications.

Drought takes toll on eastern Nebraska oaks

Visitors to state parks along Nebraska's eastern edge may notice large areas of dead or declining mature trees this year.

While trees are resilient and rarely succumb to a single stressor, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission and its partners identified multiple ones leading to massive die-offs. Prolonged drought, bur oak blight, and a new threat — hypoxylon canker — are all to blame.
