AG Nessel Secures Preliminary Injunction to Stop the Termination of AmeriCorps Grants

*LANSING* — Today, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, as part of a multistate coalition, secured a preliminary injunction (PDF) [ [link removed] ] to block the Trump Administration’s attempt to terminate AmeriCorps grants in 24 states, including Michigan. The coalition filed the lawsuit [ [link removed] ] after the states received notice on April 25 from the federal government of termination of its AmeriCorps grant programs, which support volunteer and service efforts.  

AmeriCorps is an independent federal agency tasked with engaging Americans in meaningful community-based service that directly addresses the country’s educational, public safety, and environmental needs — every year, the agency provides opportunities for more than 200,000 Americans to serve their communities. The Michigan Community Service Commission (MCSC) received approximately $18 million in grants in 2024 from AmeriCorps, supporting thousands of volunteers across the State. 

“AmeriCorps grants support essential programs, and its members contribute hundreds of thousands of hours each year to improve our parks, tutor students, and help with disaster recovery,” Nessel said. “The Trump Administration’s attempt to cancel grants was not only unlawful but would have had a devastating ripple effect across our state. This injunction ensures that these critical services continue in Michigan.” 

Attorney General Nessel was joined by the attorneys general of Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawai‘i, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington, Wisconsin, and the states of Kentucky and Pennsylvania.
