Grain bins are a common sight in Michigan’s agricultural communities, and while essential for storing grain, they can pose unique hazards in emergency situations. This training will equip responders with the knowledge and skills necessary to act quickly and safely in the event of a grain bin entrapment.

Participants will learn:

*

Grain bin structure and design

*

The four most common scenarios leading to entrapment

*

Lockout/tagout procedures

*

Rescue techniques for partially and fully engulfed victims

The hands-on portion of the training will be led by personnel from the National Education Center for Agricultural Safety and requires full NFPA-compliant gear, hearing protection, and safety glasses.

According to recent reports, the agricultural industry continues to be one of the more hazardous work environments, making preparedness essential. In 2021 alone, Michigan reported nearly 400 farm-related injuries and 19 fatalities. Programs like this help ensure local responders are ready should they be called to assist in these unique scenarios.

The Grain Bin Rescue Training is sponsored by Michigan State University Extension, Michigan Farm Bureau,  Michigan State University Occupational & Environmental Medicine, and the Corn Marketing Program of Michigan.
