Defending Medicaid Cuts, Ernst Tells Iowans, ‘We All Are Going to Die’ - The New York Times

Senator Joni Ernst is receiving national backlash for responding with “We all are going to die” to a constituent concerned that the coming Medicaid cuts could prove fatal to those who rely on it for their healthcare. She has since doubled down on her statement and refused to apologize for it, showing just how uncaring Ernst is for the lives of her own constituents.

GOP Rep. Ashley Hinson met with boos at Iowa town hall

Representative Ashley Hinson is in the same hot water as Ernst. She was recently booed at her own town hall for her support for Trump’s budget bill, one that will deeply cut Medicaid and SNAP while raising the national debt. Her constituents have voiced their opposition to this harmful bill, but it does not appear to have changed her mind.

Report ranks Iowa as state with the worst economy

A WalletHub report confirms what we already knew after seeing massive layoffs in the manufacturing and ag industry over the last year – Iowa is ranked as the state with the worst economy. The report ranks states on economic activity, economic health and innovation potential. Out of the 50 states and the District of Columbia, Iowa is ranked last in economic activity and 48th in economic health.

Representatives on the Record

Representative Mariannette Miller-Meeks (202) 225-6576

Does Rep. Miller-Meeks believe that Medicaid doesn’t matter because “we are all going to die”? Why shouldn’t Iowans be concerned about losing their healthcare? Her job is to protect our state’s citizens, not mock them for caring about themselves, their loved ones, and their neighbors. What is she doing to make sure her own constituents have easy access to healthcare and treatments?

Note From the Chair

Hey folks! Rita Hart here.

Joni Ernst has been serving as Iowa’s junior Senator for many years. While I don’t always agree with her, I certainly never expected the words, “Well, we all are going to die”, to come out of her mouth in response to a constituent’s concerns about Medicaid cuts.

Her response is utterly unbefitting of a U.S. Senator, and it’s even more disturbing that she’s doubled down on her comments instead of apologizing for them. If Ernst is unable to understand why her constituents are concerned about losing their health insurance, then is she really logical enough to represent the people of Iowa? If Ernst is unable to support people who are worried about losing access to medicines and treatments that could save their lives, then she isn’t capable of her job as a Congresswoman.

Our healthcare is under attack by the very people who are supposed to protect it. If you want to join your fellow Iowans in their fight to vote these representatives out of their jobs, please call or write the Representatives as suggested above, sign up to volunteer with the Iowa Democratic Party by clicking here and check out our events calendar by clicking here.

To make the change we all want to see, we need to work together. I appreciate your continued involvement and support of the Iowa Democratic Party.

Our work continues,

Sincerely,

Rita Hart
