Friend,
It is with deep sadness that we learned the news of the passing of the Hon. Marc Garneau.
Mr. Garneau served Canadians as a Liberal MP for over 14 years, representing the riding of Notre-Dame-de-Grâce—Westmount (previously Westmount—Ville-Marie) since 2008. He also served Canadians in Cabinet between 2015 and 2021.
Prior to becoming a Member of Parliament, Mr. Garneau made history in 1984 by becoming the first Canadian to go to space. He was later appointed President of the Canadian Space Agency.
Mr. Garneau also served as a naval officer in the Canadian Navy from 1974 to 1989. In 2003, Mr. Garneau was made a Companion of the Order of Canada, Canada’s highest civilian honour, and in 2014, he became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographical Society.
In 2015, Mr. Garneau was appointed to serve in Cabinet as Minister of Transport and worked tirelessly to move forward with important measures like Canada’s new Passenger Bill of Rights and the Oceans Protection Plan, and to improve safety across all modes of transportation. He later served as Minister of Foreign Affairs prior to his retirement from politics in 2023.
Our Liberal Party wishes to extend our condolences to Mr. Garneau’s family, friends, and loved ones.
Mr. Garneau was a Canadian hero and his historic contributions to our country will not be forgotten. We are deeply grateful for his lifelong dedication towards building a better Canada.
