Consumer Alerts

Here are the top Consumer Alerts and helpful links from May you should be aware of:

*Disaster Relief and Charity Scams* [ [link removed] ]
Disaster charity scams exploit goodwill by posing as relief organizations. To donate safely, research charities, avoid pressure, skip unknown links or payment methods like gift cards, and always give through official websites. Never donate to individuals, and request a receipt.

*After the Disaster Scams* [ [link removed] ]
Fraudsters frequently use price gouging, phony charities, or home repair scams to exploit victims of natural disasters. Research charities, avoid pressure tactics, and verify credentials to protect yourself from bad actors.

*Government Imposter Scams* [ [link removed] ]
Scammers try to steal money or personal info by impersonating government agencies via calls, texts, or emails. They may offer fake grants or demand immediate payment. Legitimate organizations won't call you out of the blue to ask for payment in the form of cryptocurrency or gift cards.

*Artificial Intelligence and Scams* [ [link removed] ]
Scammers are using AI, including voice cloning and deepfakes, to impersonate loved ones and demand money. Don’t trust caller ID—verify with a known number. Be cautious of anyone who asks for money quickly, especially if they request payment via crypto or gift cards. Report scams immediately to your bank, payment provider, or the FTC.

*Cryptocurrency Scam - Pig Butchering* [ [link removed] ]
“Pig butchering” scams combine romance and fake crypto investments to steal large sums of money. Scammers build trust over time, lure victims to bogus platforms, and vanish with their funds. Never invest with someone you’ve only met online. Report suspected scams immediately to protect your finances and personal information.

*Romance Scams: Stay Safe and Avoid Financial Heartache* [ [link removed] ]
Online and in-person dating services can pose serious risks—financial scams, identity theft, and even criminal exploitation. Protect yourself by avoiding money transfers, guarding personal info, meeting in public, and reading contracts carefully. Report suspicious activity to law enforcement or the Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Team.

*AG Nessel Launches Revamped Elder Abuse Task Force Webpage* [ [link removed] ]
Attorney General Dana Nessel launched a redesigned Elder Abuse Task Force webpage to help Michiganders recognize, report, and prevent elder abuse. The site features legal updates, reporting tools, and educational resources. With over 100,000 older adults affected in Michigan, the public is urged to take action and report suspected abuse.
