Dear John,
Freedom House’s co-founder, First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, said that “a democratic government represents the sum total of the courage and the integrity of its individuals.” Today, her vision is carried forward by courageous people around the world who are working tirelessly to defend truth, justice, and freedom. We witnessed the impact of this work firsthand at our recent 2025 Freedom Awards. This year’s honorees exemplify the spirit and mission of Freedom House.
As we approach our 85th anniversary next year, Freedom House is writing a bold new chapter. The looming threats to freedom are as serious as they were at our founding, and we are more determined than ever to confront whatever challenges await us.
But we can’t do this work alone. Safeguarding freedom requires active participation and firm commitment from every one of us.

Annual Awards 2025
Freedom House recognized a distinguished slate of advocates for democracy and freedom around the globe at its Annual Awards this year. Award recipients included Venezuelan democratic movement leader María Corina Machado, US Senators Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Roger F. Wicker (R-MS), representatives from the government and civil society of Taiwan, and Server Mustafayev, an unjustly imprisoned Crimean Tatar human rights defender.
