Hi John,
On 5 June 1975 - fifty years
ago today - Britain voted decisively to remain in the European
Economic Community. This was
a moment filled with ambition, optimism and a recognition that our
future - economic, political, cultural - was intertwined with the rest
of Europe's.
Back
then it was a Labour Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, that made the
pragmatic and principled case for Europe. "Being in does not in itself
solve our problems," he wrote, "but it offers the best
framework for success, the best protection for our standard of living,
the best foundation for greater prosperity."
Wilson's wisdom - which, nine years on from the Brexit
referendum, rings achingly true - is remembered today in an article for the Observer by former Cabinet minister Alan Johnson.
His new book Harold Wilson: 20th
Century Man discusses the vision that led to a
resounding victory for the 'Yes' campaign in 1975, offering hope that we can reignite the
belief that Britain belongs at the heart of Europe's
future.
