Working Families Party

Hi, John —

My name is Kendra. I’m a member of the Working Families Party in Iowa, a paralegal, and the mother of four children who I’ve adopted out of foster care.

For my children, the safety nets of our public schools and Medicaid really provided them the ability to get out of unsafe homes and get the care that they needed.

School is where people noticed their hair was not being combed, that their teeth were not well cared for. They were able to get support — including speech therapy and mental health care — from their school, and see doctors because of Medicaid. But our schools are struggling with less resources to work with every year as inflation goes up, and our Republican Governor gutted the program that my son needs for his speech therapy.

Just a couple of weeks ago, Republicans in the House of Representatives passed a bill that could kick millions of people, including one in five enrolled children, off of Medicaid.1

My husband and I are worried about what it will mean for our kids’ futures if this bill passes the Senate and is signed into law. There are already so many health care issues in Iowa, so many shortages of doctors and rural hospitals closing. How many more families are going to suffer? How many more children?

We are all so much closer to needing government services desperately to survive than we are to being a billionaire.

Someday, any one of us could end up needing the critical programs cut in the Republican budget including student loans, nutrition assistance, or Medicaid.

I am sharing my story because people need to understand that there is a human cost to Republican budget cuts. In my life, the people most hurt by their greed are my children.

How would these cuts impact your life, John? Share your story with the Working Families Party here and help show our representatives how important it is to fight back.

Share your story

In solidarity,
