In the past week, we’ve seen a heinous terrorist attack on a pro-Israel event in Boulder, Colorado and witnessed assurances that we were nearing a (strong) agreement with Iran and an appropriate agreement with Hamas over the hostages falter.  As such, in this week’s edition of the Action Update, we’re going to talk about promises.

**Promises Broken**

October 7th was not a second Holocaust, but it was the deadliest day in Jewish history since the Shoah. An Israeli who joined Pastor Hagee’s delegation in Israel a few weeks ago, standing feet away from where a father, mother and two children were burned alive, commented that 10/7 was a 24-hour Holocaust.

In the U.S., we like to think of ourselves as above the slaughters that we say take place elsewhere in the world – spoiler alert: we are not.

On the heels of the murder of two pro-Israel activists in Washington, a pro-Hamas terrorist attacked participants in the Run for Their Lives Walk in Boulder. Run for Their Lives is an organization that hosts such events to bring awareness to the plight of those hostages still currently held in Gaza.

The terrorist, who planned the attack for nearly a year and has expressed “no regrets,” wielded a makeshift flame-thrower and Molotov cocktails, burning 12 people, including one critically.

Among the terrorists’ victims is an elderly Holocaust survivor who has not been named in the media.

The world has not kept the promise of Never Again to that Holocaust Survivor nor to the Children of Israel writ large, but we at Christians United for Israel will.

**Promises Made**

Discussing a potential deal with Iran, President Trump posted on Truth Social in recent days: “We will not allow any enrichment of uranium!”

This is a promise, and one that comes not a moment too soon, as reports had already been circulating that the U.S. was prepared to bend to Iran on this issue. There have likewise been reports that the U.S. is considering an interim agreement with the Islamic Republic. Such an agreement – which CUFI opposes – will no doubt enable the regime to continue its nuclear pursuits, supporting international terrorism, and brutally subjugating women and girls, among others, in Iran.

Another promise made concerns the hostages. On numerous occasions, President Trump and others in the U.S. government have made clear that this war ends only when Hamas releases the hostages and ceases its vile effort to destroy the Jewish state.

In the telling of some of our leaders, we seem to always be just a few days or weeks away from a negotiated resolution, only to have our hopes dashed by the reality of Hamas’s intransigence.

The reality is that 58 people remain held for well over 600 days in Hamas’s dungeons. Each day they are there, their lives hang in the balance. CUFI supports the decisions of the democratically elected government in Jerusalem, and we share the view that this war ends when every hostage comes home and Hamas is disarmed.

**Promises Kept?**

Violent Jew hatred has become normalized in American society. Congress and the White House need to act.

First, the White House should endorse and both chambers of Congress should advance a clean draft of the Antisemitism Awareness Act. Any Members of Congress who oppose this legislation should visit the burn ward at Foothills Hospital in Boulder.

Second, the U.S. must get serious about ending America’s taxpayer subsidization of economic warfare against the Jewish state (BDS). Congress should advance and the President should sign the Countering Hate Against Israel by Federal Contractors Act, without delay.

Last, and most important, Washington must keep its word to Jerusalem that it will not make a deal with the devil. This applies to Iran and all of its agents – including Hamas.

The Foundation for Defense of Democracy’s Mark Dubowitz recently tweeted the following description of Iran’s “negotiating” strategy:

1.      Demand full sanctions relief

2.      Refuse to stop enrichment

3.      Reject offers as “non-starters”

4.      Wait for a better offer

5.      Expand the nuclear program

With a few minor changes, the same can be applied to Hamas:

1.      Demand full end to the war

2.      Refuse to disarm and/or release all the hostages

3.      Reject offers as “non-starters”

4.      Wait for a better offer

5.      Expand ability to attack Israel.

This is the reality of the world in which we live, the region in which we operate and the politics of the day. A lot of promises have been made; will they be kept? We shall see, but a good indication will be what of the above is heeded by our elected leaders in the weeks to come.

Either way, we’re going to keep our promise. At the end of the month, we’re going to show up at our nation’s capital with thousands of Christians representing millions of Americans who are united with Israel, and we are going to let our elected officials know that the only place for them to stand is with Israel.

Sincerely,

The CUFI Action Fund
