Dear John,

Jews in America and around the world have not had a second to breathe since 10/7. It’s been incident after incident, assault after assault, threat after threat every single day. All this as well as a deluge of acts of vandalism and harassment along with lawless protests, wild accusations and relentless dehumanization.

We wake up every day thinking it can't get worse.

And yet, here we are.

This time, in another violent attack on the Jewish community, 12 people including an 88-year-old Holocaust survivor were injured in a firebombing assault on a peaceful “Run for Their Lives” event in Boulder, Colorado. This is a weekly walk held to raise awareness of the Israeli hostages being held by Hamas. No politics, no drama, just ordinary people calling attention to the plight of those innocents kidnapped and brutalized by Hamas since 10/7.

Sadly, this latest incident is shocking but not surprising. The Jewish community has been subjected to an endless and escalating stream of violent rhetoric since 10/7. Less than two weeks ago, a couple was murdered while leaving an event for young Jewish professionals at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington. Our hearts go out to their families, and to those who were injured in this latest heinous antisemitic attack. We are praying for their swift and full recovery.

Immediately upon hearing of the attack, ADL mobilized into action.

- We connected with government officials at all levels — federal, state and local authorities — as well as with the Boulder Jewish community to provide our support and push for action. We have staff on the ground in Boulder who are part of the community and have been engaged since the attack.
- Analysts from the ADL Center on Extremism have mobilized, reviewing all known details and investigating the suspect’s online footprints. The suspect, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, of Colorado Springs, did not hide his hate at any point during the attack. He screamed at his elderly victims, “Free Palestine” and goaded the wounded by asking “How many children did you kill today?” He later told law enforcement that he committed the attack because he wanted to “kill all Zionist people and wished they were all dead.”
- While there are many angles to this tragedy, ADL is keeping the focus on this rise in antisemitism and the urgent need to stop it. We have been calling on elected officials, community groups, media platforms, faith leaders, among others to commit to taking action before this crisis escalates even further.
