Local Edition with Kristen Hare

Hi! This is a quick note from me as I get ready to meet a great group of folks next week with our first-ever book writing workshop at Poynter.

This newsletter will be taking a two-week break (that workshop, plus a few days off with kid stuff 🏐). Before I go, I wanted to make sure you know about a free webinar we have coming up in less than two weeks.

On Monday, June 16, “Shut Out: How Pulitzer winners worked with reluctant sources to tell powerful stories” will tackle what to do when sources are reluctant and institutions are resistant. I’ll be talking with three very smart people: Kavitha Surana from ProPublica, Alissa Zhu from The Baltimore Banner, and my colleague, Kelly McBride.

I hope you can join us. Sign up (for free!) here.

In the meantime, if you haven’t already, read “Life of the Mother” from ProPublica, The Baltimore Banner’s investigation into that city’s overdose crisis and our recent piece on source removal requests.

While you’re here:

  • From Nieman Lab, read about the launch of Lookout Local’s second newsroom, in Eugene, Oregon.

  • Apply to the Medicine in the Media workshop, happening next month in New York City.

  • The schedule for the Online Journalism Association’s annual conference is starting to take shape. I’ll be there with my colleague, Tony Elkins, to talk about burnout. If you’re going, please say hello!

  • And mark your calendars for Oct. 8-10 for the Mental Health in Journalism Summit.

That’s it for me. See you here again on June 25!

Kristen
