John, do you recognize this label?

It may be familiar to you if you own an energy-efficient refrigerator, washing machine, or other household appliance. Energy Star is an energy efficiency program that has saved over $500 billion in energy costs and prevented 4 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas pollution from entering the atmosphere. Those numbers alone make it the quintessential clean energy success story!
But now, EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin is spreading misinformation about it and threatening to privatize the public program.
In response to questions from SEEC Member Rep. Darren Soto (FL-9) , Lee Zeldin said that the Energy Star program could be run outside of the government and voiced his doubts about how much the program saved consumers (as if he didn’t have access to basic data about the program administered by his own agency).
Then, he went so far as to claim that the program was not created by Congress – but SEEC Member Rep. Kathy Castor (FL-14) was quick to correct him: “Energy Star was codified by Congress in 2005. It is the law .”
When our Environmental Protection Agency Administrator goes against the named mission of his agency as part of a larger rejection of scientific research and progress, it’s up to our SEEC members to defend science and our climate future. John, these exchanges were from the same hearing where Zeldin defended Trump’s plan to cut the EPA’s budget by more than half – that’s $4.9 billion on the chopping block for clean air, clean water, climate science, and more. The losses would be astronomical and fundamentally cripple the EPA’s mission.
These attacks aren’t about saving money. They’re about making Americans more ignorant: about their household appliances, what’s in their air and water, and how urgent our climate crisis is. Our SEEC climate champions know that Americans deserve better – help them fight back by rushing a donation today: [[link removed]]
